Mavis Staples
An icon in American R & B and gospel music, Mavis Staples graced the Beachlife stage to a packed afternoon crowd on the Rip Tide stage. I’m sure a majority of the younger crowd may have only heard her name from their parents, but I did see quite a few youngin’s hanging aournd and seemingly enjoying her jazzy blues set filled with big smiles and laughs.
Do they know she was a civil rights activist? Do they know she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 1999? Or that she’s won mulitple Grammy awards and the Grammy Lifetime Acheivement award? AND she’s collabed with artists like Prince, Arcade Fire, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, and she’s been sampled by Ludacris among other artists?
Yeah, she’s a freaking icon and it was amazing to see her live.
